London City Airport Increases its Security Screening Capacity

London City Airport has increased its passenger security screening capacity by 50% an hour with the opening of a new security zone.

The two additional security lanes will operate during peak times to help the airport restore the normal service expected by its majority business passenger customers.

London City Airport Chief Executive, John Gooding said: "The Airport’s core offering is to ensure the passenger experience is stress free with quick departure and arrival processing times. To restore quick security processing times the Airport undertook a number of measures to speed up security searches."

The changes - which include the introduction of a mezzanine floor above the main check-in area and the removal of the existing restaurant area - follow complaints from passengers that the much-publicised ten-minute check-in was not delivering, causing substantial queues and disruptions.

The new facility is part of a £7 million revamp of the terminal building due for completion in 2010.

The additional enhancement work needed to transform the airport in dealing with increased security screening regulations will take place during the airport’s closure times to ensure there is no disruption to passengers.
